The Senate grants aid to the victims of the floods in Gatumba zone

On Saturday,  May 29, 2021, a delegation of senators led by the First Deputy Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable Spès-Caritas Njebarikanuye, granted aid to 365 families, victims of the  floods of  Tanganyika Lake and the Rusizi river, who were currently gathered in Maramvya zone, Mutimbuzi commune of Bujumbura province, and who previously lived in Gatumba zone.

That aid consisted of 2 tons of beans, 2 tons of rice, 1.5 tons of corn flour, 12 tons of sweet potatoes, 375 litres of palm oil and 2,400 cakes of soap.

In a message addressed to those people, the Honourable Njebarikanuye thanked the President of the Republic for having appealed to all Burundians by inviting them to assist the people of Gatumba.

“We have come to support you to show that we have been affected by what has happened to you,” she said.

The First Deputy Speaker of the Senate promised them that the senators would ask the Government to protect the place where they lived against flooding and she advised them to respect the measures given to them by the administrative authorities.

Before granting that aid, the senators visited the zone of Gatumba to realize the current state of flooding. They also visited Gatumba border in order to assess the preparations to reopen that line which had been closed because of the Covid-19.
