On Saturday, November 12, 2022, the Speaker of the Senate, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, returned from a working mission which he had carried out in Nairobi, in the Republic of Kenya, where he had taken part in the 14th Conference of Speakers of the Chambers of Parliamentarians from EAC member states.
Speaking to the press, at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, the Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, indicated that during this Conference, they discussed the report relating to the legality of the body of the Parliament of EAC which, currently, is not recognized by statute.
In this respect, the participants in this meeting suggested to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to draft a law relating thereto and to contact the ministers of the EAC member states in order to integrate this matter at their next meeting.
The Senate Speaker also indicated that the Presidents of the Parliamentary Chambers discussed on the inter-parliamentary games which will be held soon in South Sudan. To this end, they asked the Presidents of these Institutions to be responsible in the organization of these games and especially to avoid integrating players who are not part of the Parliaments. “The ultimate goal of these games is to promote regional integration,” he said.
Furthermore, Right Honorable Sinzohagera informed that they also analyzed and approved the report of the Consultants on the establishment of a Parliamentary Institute to be headquartered in Nairobi. “This Institute will greatly contribute to the training and capacity building of the staff of the Parliaments of the EAC countries”, he added.
On the sidelines of this Conference, the Senate Speaker met with his newly elected Kenyan Senate Speaker counterpart. On this occasion, he congratulated him on his new duties and wished him every success.
These two authorities have agreed to strengthen relations and parliamentary diplomacy and thus to set up a technical team to materialize these relations.
