Commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the independence of Burundi

On Friday, July 01, 2022, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 60^th anniversary of the independence of Burundi, the Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, along with his wife, his two Deputies- and other senators, joined the Head of State, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, the First Lady, the other high dignitaries of the Nation, such as the Vice-president of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Ombudsman, the deputies, the members of the Government, various distinguished guests, the Representatives of diplomatic and consular missions accredited to Burundi, as well as a huge crowd of Burundian citizens, during these ceremonies which took place in Bujumbura, the economic capital of Burundi.

This year’s celebration was held under the theme: “Let us dedicate our forces, our hearts and our lives to our country, so that Burundi may enjoy its dignity”.

These ceremonies were mainly marked by the parade of members of the defense and security forces, military parachuting as well as various cultural dances.

The participants then followed the speech that the President of the Republic addressed to the Burundian population.

In his speech, the Head of State welcomed the fact that 60 years after independence, Burundi is characterized by good governance and democracy.

He also appreciated the fact that Burundians are in the process of building public infrastructure by their own, adding that they have already broken with ethnic divisions.

In addition, he called on Burundians to get down to work to overcome poverty and to jealously guard the step already taken in the field of development.

H.E Evariste Ndayishimiye also called on the international community to support Burundi in the process of reconciliation and development, not to retain Burundian intellectuals who had gone there for academic training, and not to welcome those who are pursued by Burundian justice.

Eventually, he awarded prizes to the best development actors in different areas of national life.
