As part of his working visit to Switzerland, the Senate Speaker, together with his delegation, continued the activities on the second and final day, on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
First of all, the Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera and the Honourable Spès Caritas Njebarikanuye took part in the meeting of the Governing Council of the 149th IPU Assembly.
Several decisions were taken in this meeting; notably the election of 3 nationals from Serbia, Mongolia and Uganda to the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians.
Several reports from different IPU committees were also presented, especially that of the Secretary General on the activities of the IPU, that of the Committee on Middle East Questions, etc.
In addition, the Burundi delegation led by Right Honourable Sinzohagera participated in the General Assembly which closed the work of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
In this Assembly, the parliamentarians adopted amendments to certain articles of the IPU statute. They also adopted resolutions, including those proposed by Argentina and France.
Moreover, it should be noted that on the sidelines of the 149th IPU Assembly, the Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Sinzohagera, received in audience a delegation from the Belgium Parliament. Their discussion focused on strengthening cooperation ties with Burundi since these two countries share long-standing historical ties.
