On May 22, 2025, the Burundi Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, participated in the opening ceremonies of the 11th International Ecology Congress, held in St. Petersburg, Federal Republic of Russia, at the Tauride Palace, under the theme “Planet Earth: Living in Harmony with Nature.”
For this first day, after the opening of the congress, the Senate Speaker took part in the panel discussions organized on two themes: “Food Security in a Context of Climate Change” and “Sustainable Development of the BRICS: How Does the Environment Make the World a Better Place?”
After welcoming the need to hold these meetings on such a crucial issue, various speakers shared the experiences of their respective countries and the initiatives already undertaken in the areas of food security, resilience to climate change, and sustainable development.
As a result of the discussions, it became clear that different countries do not enjoy equal food security, even though the effects of climate change are affecting everyone.
Convinced that the pressure of climate change weighs heavily on food security, participants from several African and Asian countries agreed on the need to demonstrate shared responsibility and international solidarity; build international partnerships and collaborations in science, technology, and innovation; strengthen investments; and practice sustainable, organic, and climate-resilient agriculture. All of these efforts would help address climate change, ensure food security, and enter in the dynamics of sustainable development.
