Presentation of research results on the German colonial period and the administrative reform of 1925 in Burundi.

On January 22, 2025, in the Matergo Hotel located in the capital of the province of Gitega, the Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel SINZOHAGERA, opened the activity of presenting the research results over the German colonial rule and the administrative reform of 1925 in Burundi. This presentation was attended by the members of the Senate Bureau, Senators as well as senior executives of this Institution.

The Senate Speaker recalled that this research is a long process which started with the 20215-2020legislature. The object of that research is to make the entire world in general and Burundi people in particular know about harmful and destructive consequences which colonization inflicted to Burundi. In his speech, Right Honourable Sinzohagera urged the instructors to finalize their research and publish a document on Burundi history.

The experts said that before the arrival of Germans in Burundi, the country had a well-hierarchical administrative structure, belief and customs. In short, they demonstrated that Burundi was a nation in its own right.

These experts showed how the settlers destroyed the unity of the Burundians. Apart from the humiliation they inflicted on them, they killed them massively and looted their material goods. In addition, they erased everything that characterized the power and sacred places of the country.

According to these experts, the settlers did everything to uproot the entire foundation of the Burundian dynasty. They demonstrated that after independence, the dreadful consequences caused by the division of the Burundians by the settlers persisted; that we have witnessed a series of killings, cyclical crises and exclusions of certain groups of the population in some institutions in the country.

To conclude the presentation, the experts urged the entire Burundian population to find their roots in order to eradicate and put an end to the practices of division.
