Assessment campaign of the ethnic quota system in Gitega and Mwaro provinces

As part of the continuing campaign to evaluate the system of ethnic quotas in the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary in accordance with Article 289 of the Constitution of the Republic of Burundi, the Senate organised meetings for representatives of the population in Gitega and Mwaro provinces on 04 and 05 September 2023.

On Monday 04 September, the First Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Honourable Dénise Ndadaye, held a meeting with representatives of the population from Nyarusange, Ryansoro, Bukirasazi, Gishubi and Buraza communes of the province Gitega.

On Tuesday, September 05,  2023, she met with representatives of Gitega, Giheta, Bugendana, Mutaho, Itaba and Makebuko communes at the chief town of Gitega Province.

As for the Second Deputy Speaker of the Senate, he met with representatives of the population from all the communes of Mwaro province on Monday 4 September 2023.

Addressing participants during those meetings, Honourables Dénise Ndadaye and Fabrice Nkurunziza told them that the Senate was in the process of collecting their proposals on the need to abolish or maintain the system of ethnic quotas in those State organs , in order to pass on the report to the President of the Republic of Burundi for appropriate decisions.

They asked the chiefs of the villages to organize such meetings with the people they govern, in order to collect their proposals and pass them on to the higher levels, who will in turn pass them on to the Senate.

During debates, some participants suggested to abolish the ethnic quota system while others opted to maintain it.
