Under the high patronage of His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi, ceremonies marking the 63rd anniversary of Burundi’s Independence took place on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the Intwari International Stadium in Bujumbura.
The Speaker of the Senate, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, accompanied by his wife; his two Deputies; senators; and senior Senate officials, joined other senior officials of the country, including the Prime Minister; the Speaker of the National Assembly; members of the Parliament; the Ombudsman and representatives of the diplomatic and consular corps accredited to Burundi.
The ceremonies began with the laying of wreaths, first at the Independence monument, then at the Mausoleum of the Independence Hero, Prince Louis Rwagasore.
The celebration continued at Intwari Stadium, featuring an impressive parade of defense and security forces, as well as cultural presentations, including the famous Gishora drummers and traditional dances.
In his address, the President of the Republic reminded the large crowd that independence means refusing to live in dependence or to reach out to others for subsistence. He took this opportunity to congratulate the military personnel who had distinguished themselves through their performance during the year, presenting them with honorary awards. He also praised the organized spirit of Burundian people and the successful conduct of the recent elections.
The Head of State urged officials to carry out their tasks rigorously and without delay, while calling on the population to strengthen national unity, love their homeland and actively engage in their daily activities in order to increase their production and improve their living conditions.
