On July 27-30, 2021, the First Deputy Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable Spès-Caritas Njebarikanuye, along with parliamentarians elected in the constituencies of Kayanza and Ngozi, met with local elected officials and heads of decentralized services working in some communes of those provinces, to discuss socio-economic development as well as the strengthening of peace and security.
In his message to the participants in that meeting, the Honourable Njebarikanuye recalled the role of local elected officials by inviting them to fight against famine, corruption and fraud. She also provided other advice to village leaders, asking them in particular to plan development projects in accordance with the orientations of their respective communes. She urged them to make decisions in compliance with the law, to know how to conduct a meeting and conclude it, to keep professional secrecy and preserve peace and security. She concluded her recommendations by asking them to protect the environment and strengthen good social cohabitation.
The Honourable Njebarikanuye also called on them to settle land disputes, resolve issues related to education and health, give value to manual work, and help in collecting taxes. The First Deputy Speaker of the Senate also urged the population to get down to development activities, fight against the Corona virus; respect the law as well as the national land heritage and human rights.
She also recalled that the Senate has just organized conferences to discuss the events of 1972 to find out the truth and reconcile Burundians. In that regard, the First Deputy-Speaker of the Senate invited all those who know the reality of the 1972 massacres to give testimonies to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR) in order to know the reality. “Those conferences were not organized with the aim of punishing the sponsors of the crimes of 1972 or for revenge,” she insisted. The Honourabe Njebarikanuye added that those conferences took place to qualify the events of 1972, and analyse how the Government should spiritually relieve the hearts of those who have lost their relatives.
