From August 23 to 25, 2022, the Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, held meetings for local elected officials and heads of deconcentrated services working in all the communes of Kirundo province, with a view to listening to their grievances in order to help them find solutions to the problems raised.
In his speech, the Right Honourable Sinzohagera urged them to preserve peace, security and take advantage of natural resources such as the lakes in the North of Burundi for self-development. He advised them to protect the environment by planting trees and drawing contour lines.
The Speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament also gave them other advice, notably on birth control, the fight against fraud and cohabitation.
He urged the population to buckle down to development activities of their respective communes. “The development of your administrative entities emanates from you,” he said.
The Senate Speaker advised the local elected officials to be good servants of the population, to preserve the people’s interests and serve as a model.
Among the grievances raised by the participants are land conflicts, problems related to the lack of fuel, beverages from BRARUDI, sugar, BUCECO cement, electricity and the inadequacy of drinking water supply.
In order to face the lack of fuel, the Right Honourable Sinzohagera urges Burundian people to increase production so that there should be products to be exported in order to have foreign currency.
Concerning the lack of cement and sugar, he invited investors to create other companies to have a large quantity of these products.
Concerning the question related to the supply of drinking water, he reassured that the Government is concerned about this issue.
In addition, the Speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament informed that it will be soon set up a village jurisdiction to decide the lawsuits related to land conflicts. He therefore advised them to elect righteous people as members of this institution.
He took this opportunity to appreciate the recent Decree of the President of the Republic in connection with the dismissal of some magistrates guilty of having badly accomplished their tasks.
