On Sunday, May 5, 2024, the First Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Honourable Denise Ndadaye, returned from a work mission to Entebbe, Uganda, where she participated in the 2nd African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on family values and sovereignty, which was held from May 1 to 3, 2024. The central theme of this conference was: “Reaffirming our African family and cultural values”.
She underlined that during these meetings, the participants notably committed to preserving their culture and heritage through the common and shared values of Ubuntu, as well as through the desire to fight against the omnipresent form of cultural colonialism, which is intensifying at the national, regional, sub-regional and international levels.
Honourable Ndadaye took this opportunity to share with other participants the importance of preserving and promoting cultural and social heritage. She also stressed that it is necessary to promote and protect this area by revising the laws related to it.
“We have appealed to African States to exercise vigilance and refrain from signing, adhering, ratifying or adopting treaties, conventions or any international legal instruments which undermine religious values, cultural and African family,” she added.
The First Deputy Speaker of the Senate also noted that the participants showed admiration to the Republic of Uganda for enacting the Anti-Homosexuality Act in 2023. They also took the opportunity to call for the reversal of the sanctions taken against some African leaders who defended African family and cultural values.
Honourable Ndadaye declared that participation in this Conference was beneficial for Burundi, because on the one hand, it has been able to learn from the experience of other Parliaments, and on the other hand, got the opportunity to share Burundi’s experience in safeguarding and protecting the country’s family and cultural values.
