SUMMARY REPORT OF THE PLENARY SESSION OF AUGUST 1, 2023

In the year two thousand and twenty-three, on the first day of August, senators met in the Senate chamber for the 148^th plenary session of the sixth legislature to proceed to:

• the opening ceremonies of the August ordinary session for the 2023-2024 financial year;

• the registration of Honorable Senators in the standing committees and the election of their bureau;

• the analysis and adoption of the draft programme of activities for the week of August 1 to 14, 2023.

This session which was chaired by the Right Honourable Emmanuel SINZOHAGERA Senate Speaker, was attended by many guests such as representatives of the Communal and Provincial Administration of Gitega, the representative of the Truth Reconciliation Commission, representatives of the judicial authorities, Ambassadors and Representatives of Diplomatic and Consular Corps accredited to Burundi, representatives of Specialized Commissions, representatives of international organizations working in Burundi, representatives of the Defense and Security Corps, executives and civil servants working in Gitega. It began as usual with a prayer at 10:19 a.m.

After the opening ceremonies, followed by a short break, the session resumed with the registration of the Honourable Senators in standing committees and the establishment of the bureaus of the latter after having reminded the senators of article 24 of the 2021 Internal Regulations which stipulates that at the start of the legislature and at the start of the first ordinary session of each year, the Senate sets up six standing committees and appoints their members. The commissions are thus constituted as follows:

At the end of the installation of the members of the bureau of standing committees, the meeting was suspended at 10:43 a.m. to give the Extended Bureau time to decide on the calendar of the activities that will follow.

Thus, the session resumed at 1:09 p.m. with the presentation, by the Speaker of the Senate, of the draft programme of activities for the period from August 01 to 14, 2023, which was adopted unanimously by the Senators present.

At 1:40 p.m., the session, which took place in a climate of mutual understanding, was closed.
