On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the Senate Speaker and his wife, visited the Youth With A Mission Centre (YWAM) located in the commune of Kabezi, province of Bujumbura.
Mr. Jagen Gouramani Nzunguri, the representative of the centre, first showed the Honourable Speaker of the Senate the various projects already carried out and those in progress, as well as the future prospects of YWAM. Among the completed projects are the construction of the Burundi Dream Academy school, the “One cup a day” project, the construction of modern houses for the Batwa community and the “i Muhira family” project. Ongoing projects include the “Umwana Clinic”, Vocational Training Centre, YWAM Hostel, YWAM Multipurpose Dining Hall and YWAM Secondary School dormitory.
The YWAM representative said that the centre’s vision is to restore and transform communities across Burundi and beyond. Every morning, children from surrounding poor families share breakfast at the centre as part of the “One cup a day” project. YWAM also built houses for the Batwa and welcomed orphaned children into foster families with the “i Muhira family” project.
Mr. Nzunguri expressed the wish to obtain exemption from the equipment and aid that the centre receives from its partners, as well as the allocation of state land by the competent authorities to allow the expansion of the project in other provinces.
Taking the floor, the Senate Speaker expressed his satisfaction with the achievements of the YWAM Centre, its current projects and its future prospects. He reassured the representative of the centre of his concerns, explaining that the administrative authorities had spared no effort to support such projects, indicating however that they were disappointed by the irresponsible behaviour of certain association representatives.
The Senate Speaker assured his support for the YWAM activities and invited the administrative authorities to lend a hand to this centre, which he considers essential for the development of Burundi. He also sensitized local authorities to collaborate with the centre to allow the population to have access to drinking water and electricity.
Finally, the Senate Speaker asked the head of YWAM to extend the activities of the centre to other provinces of the country, and invited the partners who were present to become ambassadors of Burundi and to come and invest there.
