This March 29, 2024, the Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera visited different places on the coast of Lake Tanganyika located in Bujumbura Province and Bujumbura City such as Rusizi River, a place commonly called “Ku mase”, Kinyankonge River, Kinindo West district, the Port of Bujumbura and the Kagera River to assess the implementation of the activities carried out by the Ministry having the Environment in its remit.
After all these visits, the Senate Speaker noted that these places are strongly threatened by the waters of Lake Tanganyika and the rivers which flow into it. He encouraged the authorities of the Port of Bujumbura for the w
ork they are carrying out in constructing the protective dike and other methods used to evacuate the water which has already invaded the Port. For this, he appealed to the Ministry responsible for Environment to use the same method to protect some places like the Rusizi River which continues to endanger people’s lives, to create an agency responsible for sanitation and protection of the city and many other places.
In addition, he called on patriots to be responsible, to think about future generations since we cannot reach an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060 if we do not worry about the environment.
Furthermore, he called on Burundian experts to carry out studies which should provide adequate and lasting solutions to this problem of rising water levels.
