On September 9, 2024, the Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, received in audience consecutively the Ambassadors of Belgium, Michael Wimmer and the United States of America, Mrs Lisa Peterson, at the Office of Bujumbura, the economic capital.
After their discussions, the Spokesperson for the Senate Speaker indicated that the Belgium Ambassador to Burundi had made it known that Belgium is taking new measures to renormalize relations between the two countries, specifying that it is ready to support Burundi in the areas of health, education and politics.
As for the Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, he asked that Belgium carry out concrete activities such as repairing roads, notably the one commonly referred to as “Astrida”, which was built by the Belgians in the past. He recalled that these two countries have strong historical relations, given that it was Belgium that colonized Burundi.
The Senate Speaker also appreciated the visit that the Belgian deputies made to Burundi and expressed a wish that Belgian senators should also do the same.
Concerning the visit of the Ambassador of the United States of America to Burundi, she said that she had come first to make contact and that their discussions were based on strengthening cooperation ties. She then praised the activities that the Burundi Senate is carrying out.
The Speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament hoped that American entrepreneurs would come and invest in Burundi, pointing out that measures facilitating foreign investment in Burundi have already been taken.
