The Senate Speaker, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, received in audience the FAO Special Coordinator for the networks of Parliamentary Alliances, Jean-Leonard Touadi, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in the premises of this Institution in Gitega.
At the end of the audience, Mr. Jean-Leonard Touadi thanked the Burundian institutions for the interest they reserve in food and nutritional security, and the achievement of sustainable development objectives, in particular that which consists of fight against poverty, through the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
He indicated that the Senate Speaker reiterated the need for the parliamentary institutions of the Republic of Burundi, to participate in the efforts that FAO is leading, by feeling more and more involved in the fight against hunger and poverty and malnutrition, in addition to their roles as monitors of Government action and legislators who vote on the budget.
This FAO Special Coordinator further explained that Burundi has participated in recent years in all the important events which have been organized by FAO in favour of food and nutritional security. He noted that the aim of the FAO mission is to advocate so that Burundi can ultimately achieve its national objective for food and nutritional security with a view to being part of this dynamic of the sub-region of Central African and a broader dynamic, at the continental level.
Mr. Touadi finally announced that on July 28, 2024, the Pan-African Parliament will formalize the model law on food and nutritional security at the continental level, adding that discussions are underway at the level of the Organization of the African Union, to find out what will happen after the agreements on the commitments which were made in Malabo, consisting of raising the budget allocated to food security and nutrition to 10%, given that there are a certain number of challenges that African countries must meet, with the help of parliamentary institutions.
