Following the hearing, Mr. Ndayicariye indicated that the discussions focused on the Commission’s main achievements, including the survey conducted at the national level into events which occurred between 1885 and 1973. He also mentioned the TRC’s recent work, particularly the census of people murdered or missing during various past crises.
Furthermore, he announced that the Commission has launched a new mission concerning disputes related to land and other property, in accordance with the law of May 2024.
Finally, Mr. Ndayicariye outlined the challenges facing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), including a lack of transportation and a limited budget, which hinder the effective execution of its missions. He emphasized the need to erect a building for the temporary storage and security of exhumed human remains.
After a heated exchange, the Senate Speaker welcomed the progress already made by the TRC in the search for truth and national reconciliation, and promised unwavering support from the Upper House of the Burundian Parliament to this Commission.
