As part of the control of the government action, the Senate began a series of visits to various development projects. It is in this context that the second day of their field trip, the senators visited the Department of Agriculture and Livestock. Thus, Nyamuswaga and Nyavyamo marshes and Mutwenzi agro-pastoral center were visited by the Honourable Senators led by the Right Honourable Speaker of the Senate.
In Gashoho commune, Muyinga province, they visited the Nyamuswaga marsh intended for growing sorghum for sugar and fuel production. The Speaker of the Senate said he was satisfied with the monitoring of the implementation of this project by the Ministry of Agriculture. However, he recommended that the Government closely follow the implementation of this project since the executors are not progressing well.
In Kirundo commune, the Honourable Senators visited the Nyavyamo marsh developed for rice cultivation. Given the abnormal behavior of this marsh, the connected vessels with Rwihinda Lake, the execution of that project seems impossible. This is why the Senate recommends that the Government conducts in-depth studies in order to restructure this project and take advantage of the water pumping stations already built by irrigating the surrounding fields.
Visiting the Mutwenzi Agro-pastoral Centre in Kirundo, the Speaker of the Senate is pleased with the achievements of this centre. The latter helps in the protection of the environment without forgetting its natural methods of seed conservation. He asks that this centre be supported so that it can increase production. He also hopes that the activities of this centre be extended to other localities in the country. The Right Honourable Speaker of the Senate also asks for the multiplication of small processing companies like this centre. He took this opportunity to encourage the Minister in charge of agriculture and the environment who is working hard to closely follow the projects of this Ministry.
