Continuing the campaign to evaluate the system of ethnic quotas in the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary in accordance with Article 289 of the Constitution of the Republic of Burundi, the Speaker of the Senate, Right Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, accompanied by some senators, met, on August 24 and 25, 2023, representatives of the population at different levels in the province of Rumonge.
In Muhuta communal high school, he met those of Muhuta and Bugarama communes, on Thursday, August 24, and in the capital of Rumonge province those of Burambi, Buyengero and Rumonge communes, on Friday August, 25 of this year.
Addressing the participants in these meetings, Right Honourable Sinzohagera told them that the Senate is in the process of collecting their proposals on the need to abolish or maintain the system of ethnic quotas in these state bodies in order to transmit the report to the Head of State, for appropriate decision-making.
The Speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament urged these leaders to go and organize such meetings with the population which they represent, in order to collect their proposals and transmit them to the higher levels which, in turn, will transmit them to the Senate.
Through a debate, for all these meetings, some participants proposed that there be the abolition of this system of ethnic quotas, others opted for its extension.
In Muhuta, the Speaker of the Senate also responded to the concerns of the population, which were mainly related to land disputes, the lack of electricity and roads in some localities.
